SOLAR POWERED SIGNS
Welcomes Visitors To Cocoa Beach

The City of Cocoa Beach has installed photovoltaic powered signs to welcome visitors to the city. The city, with the assistance of Healey & Associates and the support of the Florida Energy Office, has implemented a variety of Solar Applications at its Recreational Complex as a demonstration of viable commercial solar applications that can benefit Florida's Business Community. The solar powered signs welcome visitors to the city and invite them to the Solarized Recreational Complex.

The city's new solar powered welcome signs are installed at the city's north and south entrance on highway A1A. The signs are internally lighted with power provided by a solar power unit, a self contained package provided by the Solar Electric Power Company. The power unit consists of a pole mounted assembly of photovoltaic panels, a battery assembly, and system controller in a weather proof enclosure installed adjacent to the sign.

The solar system turns the sign on at dusk and off at dawn year round. The lighted sign operates in a stand-alone mode independent of utility power. It is an outstanding example of the reliability, flexibility and versatility of photovoltaics for powering lighting systems in locations away from utility lines.
