Solar Applications for Recreational Facilities

With the help of the Florida Alternative Energy Corporation's engineering group, Healey & Associates, the City of Cocoa Beach has SOLARIZED its recreational complex. The city, with the support of the Florida Energy Office, has implemented a variety of solar applications at the Recreational Complex as a demonstration of viable commercial solar applications that can benefit Florida's Business Community.

A recreational complex contains a variety of sites that can effectively use sunshine, Florida's most abundant natural resource. The City's recreational complex has a 27-hole golf course, a 38,000 square foot Clubhouse which features a lounge, restaurant, conference rooms, an auditorium and banquet facilities as well as the usual golf related facilities. The complex also has an outdoor Olympic size pool, a tennis complex with ten lighted courts, ball fields and picnic facilities. The dinning facilities, showers at the pool, tennis courts and clubhouse require hot water that can be heated by the sun. A heated pool can be used all year long and a 218-acre recreational facility has a numerous applications for solar electric or photovoltaic systems.

Henry M. Healey, P.E., President of the Florida Alternative Energy Corporation designed the award winning solar projects for the recreational complex. Mr. Healey was recognized for "Oustanding and Achievement to Florida's Solar Energy Industry" by the State Department of Community Affairs. The water heating systems and the pool heating systems were selected by the Florida Solar Energy Industry Association as the Best Projects of the year in 1995.

The information that follows gives a brief description of the solar individual applications at the complex designed by Healey & Associates. Perhaps similar solar systems can be used in your business.
