PUBLICATIONS
State and federal governments publish a wealth of information
applicable to community projects. The most well-known source of
information is the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO), the
largest publisher in the world.
Publications about renewable technologies can be located
through a variety of electronic and paper indexes. The National
Technical Information Service (NTIS) provides technical information
about projects funded by the federal government. The Office of
Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) collects information
from worldwide research on energy, in addition to research funded
by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Researchers looking for detailed information know that the
cutting edge of technology often resides in technical papers.
Most papers have an abstract—a short summary of the information
contained inside. The titles, authors, abstracts and vendors of
technical papers are frequently recorded in databases for easy
computer access. Comprehensive indexes like DOE’s Integrated
Technical Information System (ITIS) provide on-line data bases for
this type of information.

a video for the U.S. Department of Energy that contains two programs:
Tomorrow’s Energy Today and Tomorrow’s Energy Today: The Energy
Efficiency Option. The programs provide the latest information on
alternative energy sources and energy saving technologies and are
appropriate for viewers of high school age and older. To order your

Operated by the U.S. Department of Commerce, NTIS is the central
source for scientific and technical reports on research sponsored with
federal funds. NTIS also catalogs and distributes software developed by
the federal government. In total, NTIS makes more than two million
documents available to the public and provides conference proceedings
from a variety of technical conferences. NTIS indexes are available on-line,
on disk or in print. NTIS publications are compiled into a DIALOG computer
database called NTIS.
