State and federal governments publish a wealth of information
applicable to community projects. The most well-known source of
information is the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO), the
largest publisher in the world.
Publications about renewable technologies can be located
through a variety of electronic and paper indexes. The National
Technical Information Service (NTIS) provides technical information
about projects funded by the federal government. The Office of
Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) collects information
from worldwide research on energy, in addition to research funded
by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Researchers looking for detailed information know that the
cutting edge of technology often resides in technical papers.
Most papers have an abstracta short summary of the information
contained inside. The titles, authors, abstracts and vendors of
technical papers are frequently recorded in databases for easy
computer access. Comprehensive indexes like DOEs Integrated
Technical Information System (ITIS) provide on-line data bases for
this type of information.
