Swimming Pool
SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEM
The city of Cocoa Beach has an outdoor Olympic size swimming pool at the recreational complex that now can be used by city residents year round. A Solar Pool Heating system, designed by Healey & Associates, was installed to heat the pool in order to extend the swimming season. The solar water heating system for the pool includes a pool cover and a wind screen for energy conservation as well as an auxiliary heater to ensure the pool can maintain the outdoor Olympic size pool at the 80 degree temperature required of competition pools. The solar pool heating system is one of the largest in Florida.
The systems uses 72, four by ten foot solar collectors, glazed because of the windy location, heating 300 gallons of water each minute the sun is shining and the pool is less than 80 degrees in temperature. The temperature of the water is conserved when the pool is not being used by the 12,600 square foot thermal blanket and wind screen installed as part of the solar pool heating project. The large size of the pool cover made it necessary to use six sections to cover the pool. The blanket is stored on stainless steel rollers to simplify the covering and uncovering.
