Instructor: Henry M. Healey, P.E.

Healey & Associates

Mr. Healey is a Professional Engineer, General Contractor, Trainer and Educator with extensive experience in the design, acquisition, construction, commissioning and operation of solar energy projects for commercial, industrial, and governmental facilities. Mr. Healey has designed more than 100 solar water heating and photovoltaic projects for Federal, Commercial and Industrial (C&I) facilities. He routinely provides facility owners, managers and the solar community, assistance in the development, design, acquisition, construction, and installation of solar energy systems. He has developed low cost designs for process heating, conducted solar audits for new and existing applications and diagnosed problems with, corrected and returned service to poorly performing or inoperative solar systems cost effectively. He specializes in the design of cost effective systems for commercial and industrial applications, and has provided construction documents, commissioning services and developed training programs and operation and maintenance manuals, for architects, engineers, installers, facility managers and maintenance staff.

Mr. Healey has been actively involved in solar applications since the-mid 70's and recently designed and commissioned solar projects at NASA (KSC), the U.S. State Dept, and the National Park Service (Everglades). He assisted NASA (MSFC) in evaluation of projects in the National Solar Heating and Cooling Demonstration program and directed the Solar Facilities program for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the agency's Photovoltaic program. Mr. Healey served on the Solar Federal Buildings Editorial Review Board and the US DOE Federal Photovoltaic Program Advisory Committee. He was a consultant to USDOE (ETEC) and ASHRAE for the Solar Federal Buildings Program and assisted in the development of ASHRAE's Solar Design, Installation and O & M manuals. He has served as a consultant and trainer for ASHRAE, the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the United Nations. Mr. Healey has assisted in the development of solar training programs and publications for ASHRAE, NREL and FSEC including the FEMP Solar Water Heating & FSEC's Commercial Solar System Operation and Maintenance publications.

Mr. Healey has received international recognition and awards for his solar work. He received ASHRAE's First Place Technology Award for Renewable Energy Use in 1994 for a low cost site built, large volume (30,000 gpd), solar process water heating in an agricultural application, an award from the Florida Department of Commerce and the Florida Solar Energy Industry Association for a combination of Solar Water Heating and PV projects at a Recreational Complex in 1995. Mr. Healey is experienced in solar thermal applications, photovoltaics, geothermal and integrating resource (energy & water) conservation into all energy projects. He has designed, installed, tested, evaluated and upgraded photovoltaic systems for pumping, lighting, communication, environmental monitoring and grid connection. Mr. Healey has experience in both stand alone and utility interactive solar electric power generating systems using wind, photovoltaics and biogas systems. Mr. Healey designed TVA's Small Community Photovoltaic Project which included four utility interactive residential systems, a commercial size PV generating system as well as numerous smaller stand alone photovoltaic systems for remote homes and other equipment including lighting, pumping and data collection systems.

Mr. Healey is an expert in the implementation of successful and cost effective solar energy systems. He has extensive experience in all aspects of alternative energy applications and energy conservation. He has demonstrated the ability to develop, review, evaluate and implement major energy projects and programs successfully. Mr. Healey has provided solar designs, evaluations and technical assistance to organizations such as the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Tennessee Valley Authority, NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy, the United Nations and numerous professional, commercial and industrial concerns. Mr. Healey has returned poorly performing or inoperative solar systems to service cost effectively, developed operation and maintenance manuals and provided solar training for NREL, ASHRAE, and FSEC to architects, engineers, facility managers and the general public. He is the author of numerous publications in the energy field.
